A Breath of Fresh Air: Lung Cancer Screening Rolls Out Nationwide

Starting July 1, 2025, Australia will roll out its first-ever National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP), a landmark initiative aimed at reducing deaths from one of the country’s most common and deadliest cancers.

Lung cancer is responsible for more deaths than any other cancer in Australia, largely due to late diagnosis. The NLCSP seeks to change that by offering eligible people free, two-yearly low-dose CT scans — a simple and highly effective way to detect lung cancer early, when treatment is most successful.

Who is eligible?

You may qualify if you:

  • Are aged between 50 and 70 years
  • Have a history of smoking (30 years of smoking 20 cigarettes a day)
  • Currently smoke or quit within the last 10 years
  • Have no symptoms of lung cancer

Why it matters:

Early detection dramatically improves survival. When caught early, lung cancer treatment is more likely to be successful and less invasive. The program is expected to prevent over 500 deaths each year and save more than 12,000 lives over the next decade.
