NSW ADHD Prescribing Changes: What They Mean for Patients
ADHD prescribing in NSW is changing, giving appropriately trained and authorised GPs a greater role in supporting the ongoing care and management of patients with an established ADHD diagnosis.
From 1 September 2025, GPs who have completed NSW Health-approved training can become ADHD Continuation Prescribers.
They can provide ongoing prescriptions for eligible patients who have already been diagnosed and are stable on stimulant medication. This reform aims to improve access to care and reduce pressure on specialist services.
An ADHD Continuation Prescriber is a GP who has completed the required NSW Health training and authorisation to provide ongoing stimulant prescribing for eligible patients whose ADHD diagnosis and treatment have already been established.
A key point to note is that these changes are about continuing treatment, not starting it. Patients must already have a diagnosis and treatment plan in place.
For children and adolescents aged six years and over, the changes mainly affect ongoing management.
A Paediatrician or other appropriate specialist is still involved in the initial assessment, diagnosis and the decision to start stimulant medication.
Once treatment is established, many families may no longer need to see the specialist just for repeat prescriptions.
Children are usually managed in a shared-care model and will still need regular reviews with their Paediatrician or other specialist. The frequency will depend on the child's individual needs.
For adults, the reforms can make ongoing treatment more accessible.
Eligible adults can receive ongoing stimulant prescriptions through an authorised GP.
This may reduce the need for some specialist appointments solely for repeat prescriptions.
GPs can also provide more coordinated care when they are managing other health concerns alongside ADHD.
Not necessarily – it depends on your individual circumstances and your existing care arrangement.
Some specialists may:
Continue to prescribe the medication themselves
Use a shared-care approach
Review you periodically
Transfer ongoing prescribing to an authorised GP
Please discuss the most appropriate arrangement with your current specialist and GP.
2025: ADHD Continuation Prescribers
More GPs are authorised to continue prescribing for eligible patients with an established diagnosis.
2026: Endorsed GP training and rollout
NSW Health is training GPs to become ADHD Endorsed Prescribers.
Next stage
Endorsed GPs will be able to diagnose ADHD and initiate stimulant treatment within approved clinical frameworks.
The rollout is being phased, with a focus on improving access in rural, regional and vulnerable communities.
If you already have an established ADHD diagnosis and are receiving treatment, speak with your GP or current ADHD specialist about your ongoing prescribing arrangements.
Your GP can advise whether they are able to provide ADHD continuation care and whether this is appropriate for your individual circumstances.
