Ongoing ADHD medication management through a shared-care approach between your GP and specialist

For many people living with ADHD, treatment is an important part of maintaining their health, wellbeing and day-to-day functioning. Once a diagnosis has been made and medication has been established at a stable dose, ongoing prescribing may be able to be managed by a specially trained GP in collaboration with your treating specialist.

An ADHD Continuation Prescriber is a GP who has completed specialised NSW Health-approved training and is authorised to provide ongoing stimulant medication prescribing for eligible patients who have already been diagnosed with ADHD and stabilised on treatment.

Where appropriate, a trained GP may also make minor dose adjustments or change between formulations of the same medication, such as short-acting and long-acting preparations, based on the patient’s clinical needs.

A Paediatrician or other appropriately qualified specialist remains involved in the initial assessment and diagnosis of ADHD, as well as the decision to commence stimulant medication.

Once treatment has been established and a child is stable on their medication, many families may be able to have their ongoing prescriptions and routine monitoring managed by a trained GP, rather than needing to attend specialist appointments solely to obtain repeat prescriptions.

It is important to note that most children are currently managed through a shared-care model and will still need to see their Paediatrician or specialist regularly, often on an annual basis. Your child’s specialist will advise you on the appropriate follow-up schedule.

For eligible adults, accessing ongoing stimulant prescriptions through a trained GP can make ADHD treatment more convenient and accessible, while potentially reducing the cost and frequency of specialist appointments.

GPs are also well placed to provide holistic and coordinated care. Many adults with ADHD may experience other health concerns, including anxiety, depression, sleep difficulties or cardiovascular risk factors. Your GP can consider these factors alongside your ADHD treatment and coordinate your overall healthcare within one practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Your GP can assess your concerns and refer you to an appropriately qualified specialist for an ADHD assessment and diagnosis. GPs who are ADHD Continuation Prescribers do not diagnose ADHD as part of this service.

No. Only GPs who have completed the required NSW Health-approved training and meet the relevant prescribing requirements can become ADHD Continuation Prescribers.

If you are already diagnosed with ADHD and taking stimulant medication, the first step is to speak with your GP to confirm whether they are an authorised ADHD Continuation Prescriber and whether they are able to take over your ongoing prescribing.

You should also discuss this with your treating specialist. If your specialist is comfortable with your GP taking over ongoing prescribing, they will provide a letter to your GP outlining your treatment, confirming that your medication is stable, and requesting that your GP take on ongoing stimulant prescribing. The specialist will also advise when they would like to review you again.

Your GP will then continue to monitor your treatment and prescribe your medication in accordance with the relevant prescribing requirements and your individual healthcare needs.
